PEOPLE Total population of Bangladesh is about 150 million of which some
80% live in the rural areas.Among the city dwellers some ten million people live
in the capital city, Dhaka. Of the total population some 88% are Muslims, around
11% are Hindus, 1% Buddhists and Christians. There are about half a million tribal
people, the majority of whom live in the Chittagong Hill Tracts region.
LIFE About 60% of the people are engaged in agriculture. The lifestyle of
these people is a very simple one. From dawn to dusk they work in the fields tending
crops and animals while women prepare foods, look after other household affairs
and take care of the children at home. Rice and fish are the common diet of the
people. Lungi and vest is the usual attire for men in the rural areas as opposed
to shirts and trousers in the urban areas. Almost all the women wear sarees. The
shaloar-kamiz is also quite popular, and in urban areas some women wear western
attire. The tribal people have distinct dresses of their own. All round the year
people celebrate different festivals both religious and secular.
